In this self-portrait Salzmann depicts himself greeting his psychologist. Standing between them is the painter Alexej von Jawlensky, the companion of fellow-artist Marianne von Werefkin, with whom Salzmann had an affair in 1903-05. In a two-part sequence of drawings titled Salve and Clueless Salzmann attempted to overcome the pain of their separation.
