GILLES LORIN
The Timeless Transience
The works of the artist Gilles Lorin, who uses the medium of analogue photography, are a rare exception within the digital age. His ongoing experimentation with old methods has earned him among experts the reputation of an alchemist, whose trademark it is to create each of his prints personally in his own laboratory. But it is not only the pursuit of technical perfection that drives the artist, who has been living in southern Germany for several years, but also the search for absolute inner and outer harmony in his pictures.
The exhibition The Timeless Transience invites to explore the visual worlds of Gilles Lorin, which are as aesthetic as they are mysterious. Carefully composed photographs convey a sense of meditative calm and make one forget the hustle and bustle of the fast-paced present. Lorin's range of motifs includes pervasive psychological portraits, scenes of deserted places as well as mysterious landscapes and extracts of nature. Focusing on the cycles DIVIN and Memento Mori, the exhibition explores both the wonders of creation and the transience of existence.
Regardless of the motif, the photographs reveal that Lorin is concerned with capturing the soul of the respective subject. In this way, the artist, who is familiar with the fine line between life and death through his own experience, proves to be a philosopher whose timelessly beautiful compositions proclaim a meaning that lies behind things. Captivating because of their material aesthetics, the photographs also call for in-depth contemplation outside the virtual world.

FROM KLINGER TO STUCK
Pictorial Worlds of German Symbolism
ON THE LIGHTNESS OF BEING
Joie de vivre between Belle Époque and Roaring Twenties
Europe around 1900: Decades of peace lead to great prosperity in large parts of the society. This is accompanied by the desire to enjoy life to the fullest. Wanting to see and to be seen the settings of the Belle Époque like the boulevards of the metropolises, their cafés and cabarets, studios and galleries as well as concert halls and salons are highly frequented.
Whether in Paris, Berlin, Vienna or Munich, artists throw themselves everywhere enthusiastically into the vibrant life providing them with the best motifs for their works. While Ernst Heilemann, Adolf Münzer and Ferdinand von Reznicek depict the delights of the bourgeoisie, Julia Berg and her partner Lyonel Feininger delve into the bohemian world, free of social conventions. With the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, however, the carefree lifestyle of the Belle Époque comes to an abrupt end.
Germany after 1918: After years full of privation, the war has led to serious political and social changes. Whereas the early years of the Weimar Republic were marked by social dislocations and hardship, the economic revival brought new prosperity from the mid-1920s onwards. This stark dichotomy is reflected by the contrasting realities of life of the upper and lower classes in the Roaring Twenties.
As the main representative of New Objectivity, Otto Dix focused on the fringe groups of society, whose habitus and fate he portrayed in unsparing milieu studies. In contrast to this stand the watercolours of the Berlin artist Dörte Clara Wolff, known as DODO, inspired by the aesthetics of Art Déco. Her ironic depictions illustrate the sophisticated lifestyle of the high society, who amused themselves between the Côte d'Azur, the Swiss mountains and Egypt.
What connects the Belle Époque with the Roaring Twenties is unbridled joie de vivre. However, it is one of the tragedies of history that both epochs were only granted a short period of prosperity.

FROM KLINGER TO STUCK
Pictorial Worlds of German Symbolism
The period around 1900 was marked by groundbreaking discoveries in all fields of science, radically changing the reality of people's lives. Questions about the future of society arose, and the arts provided different answers leading to an unprecedented diversity of intellectual and artistic movements throughout Europe. One of the highlights was Symbolism, which found its most prominent German representatives in Max Klinger and Franz von Stuck.
Based on academic realist painting, both Klinger and Stuck designed mysterious pictorial worlds that stood in contrast to the everyday life of their contemporaries. While an aestheticized depiction encourages to deal with the fateful questions of humanity, their embedding in mythological and fairy tale contexts creates a sense of distance. This is necessary in order not to be perceived as oppressive or even disturbing by the audience. Thus, the Symbolists sought to reconcile tradition and modernity.
The Exhibition FROM KLINGER TO STUCK. Pictorial Worlds of German Symbolism presents not only key works but also showpieces by the two stars of the fin de siècle. They give an idea of the thematic spectrum of art around 1900, ranging from the utopian unity of man and nature to the battle of the sexes and the powerlessness of man facing higher powers.
